UKGC Launches Public Consultation on Online Slot Redesign
The UK Gambling Commission is exploring the potential for altering the game mechanics of online slot machines. In an effort to protect players from gambling harm, the regulator has launched a public consultation to gather opinions on whether slots require a significant overhaul.
According to data from the GC, 1.2% of British adults are spending excessive amounts on gambling. Those who spend more tend to use specific features found in slot games, which can pose a high-risk for individuals experiencing gambling harm.
The UKGC has stated that factors such as speed of play and frequency of betting opportunities can determine if someone is at risk of developing compulsive gaming habits. This recent action comes after a previous attempt to implement changes in slot machine design failed.
Industry Work Group Unsuccessful in Implementing Changes
After appointing Playtech and Scientific Games, the UKGC is now ramping up their efforts. According to the Gambling Commission, these companies were unable to meet their objectives.
These objectives included limiting or removing certain features such as turbo or slam stops. Additionally, the workgroup was tasked with implementing a minimum game cycle requirement.
Regulators also proposed removing split-screen games. When asked for an explanation behind these decisions, the UKGC simply stated that they are dedicated to further reducing gambling harms.
Some industry organizations have criticized the UKGC for attempting to restrict too much of the industry without proper justification. They argue that the number of individuals experiencing gambling harm is too low to warrant such drastic changes that would significantly impact the industry.
Combining Public Opinion with Work Group Findings
Despite this, the UKGC is open to considering all suggestions, including those presented by Playtech and Scientific Games. The regulator plans to combine these recommendations with proposals from all licensees, taking into account input from various industry stakeholders who may be affected by these changes.
One proposed change is to amend the definition of online slots. The industry is seeking modifications to the remote gambling and software technical standards (RTS).
Specifically, the Advisory Board for Safer Gambling (ABSG) wants players to only be able to play one game at a time. This would prevent some consumers who stream their online casino gaming sessions from using split-screen and auto-play features in order to rapidly spend large amounts of money.
Regulators are also proposing a minimum speed requirement of 2.5 seconds in slot games. This would allow players to still enjoy the game while slowing down its overall pace, potentially reducing gambling harm.
The Commission is currently discussing how enforcement will be carried out. According to regulators, an independent testing house will assess whether slots comply with these measures.
- If any discrepancies are found, the testing house may restrict the specific game title.
- Alternatively, they may restrict the entire portfolio of the company in question.
